Overview

Nipple and areola (the darker area surrounding the nipple) cancer, commonly known as Paget's disease of the nipple, is a rare form of breast cancer. The illness was first described by a British surgeon named Sir James Paget in the 19th century, hence the name. Paget's disease of the nipple is characterized by the following hallmarks: - Persistent eczema-like changes: The affected nipple and areola may exhibit symptoms such as redness, itching, peeling, crusting, or inflammation, which might resemble eczema. Common eczema treatments frequently fail to alleviate these signs and symptoms. - The nipple may ooze or release a clear or red fluid. - Alterations to the nipple include flattening, inversion, and other morphological distortions. - In many instances, a breast lump or tumor that may or may not be palpable is present. Note that invasive breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is often present in patients with Paget's disease of the nipple. Clinical evaluation, imaging techniques (such as mammograms or breast ultrasounds), and confirmation via biopsy are often used together to make a diagnosis. Depending on the cancer's location, size, and progression, a mastectomy, breast-conserving surgery, or radiation therapy may be recommended. Individuals with Paget's disease of the nipple, and the underlying breast cancer, benefit greatly from early detection and fast treatment. If you observe any persistent changes or symptoms in your nipple or breast, it's crucial to seek medical assessment and assistance.
