Overview

The composer has written a survey of his experiences which covers the last half of the nineteenth century. In addition to many records of Mendelssohn and other famous musicians which he has noted from the verbal accounts of his father and others, the book contains a lively account of Irish life in the middle of the century, and descriptions of many interesting details of Dublin society and of institutions which have now disappeared. Although the chief interest of the book, as is natural, centres in its musical contents, it is by no means confined to them: the Bar, the Church, and the scientific and medical professions in Ireland have provided the author with much interesting and humorous material. Student life in Cambridge in the seventies has given him the opportunity of making thumb-nail sketches of many eminent men, such as Dr. Thompson (Master of Trinity), and others of his time. His Wander-jahre in Germany and in France throw much light on the conditions of -artistic life in those countries shortly after the Franco-Prussian War, and his reminiscences of leading musicians whom he personally knew -- Brahms, Joachim, Kiel, von Bulow, Reinecke, and many more -- are of much interest to music-lovers. His connection with musical education in this country is made the basis of much discussion as to its tendencies and prospects in the various fields where the art is utilized. The author's friend- ship with Tennyson, Browning, Leighton, J. K. Stephen, and other notabilities of the Victorian age has resulted in many memories of their words and deeds. A characteristic passage in Mr. Labouchere's life is graphically recorded, and with some other lively episodes provides a humorous relief.
