Studium der Klassischen Philologie, Geschichte, Pädagogik, Psychologie und Philosophie an den Universitäten Würzburg und Freiburg im Breisgau. 10 Jahre Schuldienst. 1964 Promotion in Pädagogik (Würzburg). Von 1964 bis 1979 als Dozent und Professor für Systematische und Historische Pädagogik an der Erziehungswissenschaftlichen Hochschule Rheinland-Pfalz. Von 1979 bis 1993 Ordinarius für Pädagogik an der Universität München (LMU).
