It is operated by a non-profit organization of hackers that publish new security information and offer tools for educational and testing purposes.In the Summer of 1999, John Vranesivich, the founder of hacking news website Anti-Online, complained about alleged criminal activities and death threats directed at himself originating from Packet Storm which was hosted by the Harvard University at the time. This caused the Harvard University administration to shut down the site for fear of legal action. The site was then hosted for a short time by Securify and since 2001 by Applied Security.
