Overview

Though the countries that border both sides of the Pacific incorporate vastly different cultures, climates, and languages, their contemporary residential architecture shares many similar traits. The Pacific Rim is a global epicenter of growth: Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia have strong economies that have translated into building booms, including striking modern houses designed by some of the world's most talented architects. Sometimes their designs are striking in their consistently crisp, modern forms rendered in glass, steel, and concrete. In other cases, their architects draw on local cultural or vernacular building materials, perhaps in stone and wood, to create houses very much of their place.
