A single tweet... that's all it took to change my entire trajectory. In the fall of 2022, while navigating a routine high school life, I was inherently curious. It took until December 18th, but I will never forget when I saw Ice Cube, the famous rapper, quote-tweet a sub-100-follower account, who claimed to have ""@BIG3Ownership tickets to games, free catered food, free merch, and signed Fireballs, among other perks."" As a die-hard Mets fan, and a (New York) Giants and Knicks fan, I couldn't help but wonder, what sort of league offers those perks to just any fan? Indeed, it was a low-odds giveaway. Except, it wasn't. Click after click after click, I began exploring the BIG3 basketball league. Nonetheless, it wasn't until I came across the Krause House and DeGods DAOs that the idea truly struck me: the BIG3 league is centered radially around its fans. These two DAOs, groups with passion surpassing even my proud personal fandoms, had come together and purchased teams in the league. As someone who has spent boundless hours analyzing and discussing assorted sports statistics, the DAO concept of fan ownership has since fascinated me more than anything else, ever; opposing the traditional structure where a select few control the destiny of a team that represents an entire region, the unique idea hooked me. Furthermore, only soon after looking into DAOs did I learn that their entire premise was reliant on technology. Specifically, a technology called blockchain, which I understood Bitcoin runs on, enables their decentralization. Since I have always enjoyed mathematics and computer programming, in addition to nurturing a rapidly growing appreciation for economics, blockchains could not have piqued my interest any more. Thus, I was ready. Devouring anything I could find -- whitepapers, articles, podcasts, YouTube videos, websites, an online course, mobile applications, other books, and insights from helpful people -- I uncovered the Sports DAO universe, recognizing that many use cases further aligned with my principles. The DAO mechanism allows for voting on critical decisions; it gives everyone a say. Sports DAOs, I realized, have the potential to democratize sports and empower communities like never before. Everyone is involved in countless communities, whether they recognize it or not. This community aspect, effectively, could be significant in any situation. Relating to my interests apart from sports, I discovered KlimaDAO, a group focused on rallying ordinary people to combat climate change, funding carbon removal projects to help build a sustainable future. Moreover, I observed that there were already many other DAO start-ups and the makings of countless more to come. Today, not only do I view DAOs as perhaps the most intriguing idea I've ever been fortunate enough to encounter, but also as an innovation with profound global potential. Over a year and a half in the making, I dearly hope this book instills in you even a fraction of the curiosity I have found in the concept of DAOs. I'm forever grateful for your time and I hope you grasp how to #OwnTheGame -- in sports and for society.
