Overview

Recent college graduate and part-time beauty blogger Kat works at a retail store while dreaming of a future as a successful businesswoman. An old friend encourages her to sign up to BeautyHands, a multi-level marketing business. Kat gets into considerable debt in order to join, only to discover that the products are of very low quality. She is unable to sell them on, and finds herself in financial crisis. Soon, she loses her apartment. With the help of her considerably more organized, but somewhat impatient, friend May, Kat tries to get her life back in order. She also begins to research Beauty Hands, trying to find some way of getting her money back. She discovers that the business owner happens to be May's greedy landlord. She also finds out that Zara, the famous hand model representing the business, is in fact being coerced into doing so. With the help of a cast of friends - including May's highly eccentric grandmother Bubbles, Zara (who turns out to be a cat-loving animal volunteer in her spare time) and a chemistry student friend from school - Kat manages to dig up enough dirt on Beauty Hands to cause strong public interest. In the final section, she confronts the owner and his lawyers. Together with her friends, she is able to force him to step back from his company and he is legally prosecuted. In a twist at the very end of the story, the reader learns that May's eccentric grandmother has now also become involved in a pyramid scheme.
