OverviewWhen a person who is emotionally attached to something is separated from that something, they may experience extreme worry or suffering. This condition is known as separation anxiety disorder (SAD). Although adults are less likely to experience this illness, it is nonetheless possible. It's more than just being sad or lonely while you're away from your loved ones; it may seriously disrupt your daily life. Characteristics that may be present in Separation Anxiety Disorder include: - Excessive Worry: People with SAD frequently worry excessively about being away from a loved one (typically a parent or caregiver) or a safe and secure setting (such as home). - In the face of or in anticipation of separation, one may experience a variety of physical symptoms, such as a headache, stomachache, or nausea. - Individuals with separation anxiety disorder (SAD) may take extraordinary measures to avoid settings where they anticipate separation. A child suffering from SAD might, for instance, refuse to go to class. - The inability or unwillingness to sleep alone is a typical symptom in children. They may have trouble sleeping alone and demand to cuddle up with a parent or caregiver instead. - Nightmares or night sweats could be signs of separation anxiety in children with seasonal affective disorder. - Children with SAD who are of school age may refuse to go to school or show extreme sadness when separated from their parents. - Separation Anxiety Disorder is characterized by extreme anguish when apart from a loved one, which can endure for weeks or months (at least four weeks in children and adolescents). - Separation anxiety and discomfort are regarded age-inappropriate if they are more severe or last longer than would be expected given the individual's stage of development. Psychiatrists and psychologists are trained to identify and treat Separation Anxiety Disorder in their patients. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is commonly used in treatment, as it teaches patients effective methods for dealing with their anxiety. Medication is sometimes considered as part of a therapy plan, but only in extreme circumstances or after other approaches has failed. People with Separation Anxiety Disorder have a better chance of leading normal, satisfying lives if they are diagnosed and treated early.
