OverviewThis Edition contains the full course, teachers notes, handouts and much more! Overcome is a Christ-Centered approach to substance abuse and addiction recovery. This Leaders Edition contains everything you need to begin support group meetings, including: teachers notes and guidance and weekly meeting handouts. The Overcome Support Group curriculum is currently being used in churches in Western North Carolina to help battle the substance abuse problem by educating, encouraging and engaging people right where they are. For many, getting clean and sober is the easy part, but staying that way and learning how to re-connect and re-engage with family members and community is often the hardest part. Overcome seeks to provide a platform and vehicle for small group discussion and discipleship. Over the years we have witnessed great progress in the lives of the individuals we minister to. Many motivating factors for addiction are covered throughout this book, such as: anger, depression, isolation, bitterness and many more. This special edition is being offered publicly to meet the requests of not only other local churches but also national organizations who have expressed a feeling of loss and hopelessness when attempting to help those they serve. We have decided to offer this manual to help those organizations who are drawn to do something to help the fight but don't necessarily know where to start. Excerpt from Overcome - Introduction Chapter - Development: The premise for Overcome is rather straightforward: addiction as a side effect of a much larger issue. Usually a lot of hidden issues that act as motivations for addiction, which we address in 17 topical sessions. There was no way I could be all inclusive with the motivations. If I were, the class would go on forever. Regardless, from research and examples in my own life, I began to see trends in emotional reactions I had resulting from circumstances and strings of events that could have turned out much differently had I exhibited a few mature thoughts and what the bible calls wisdom and discretion. I have however, realized I am always going to have the need to pour myself into something. Good or bad. I could choose to fight that personality flaw and live an exhausting existence mired down by restraint or give it to God and let Him transform it into something better. Note from the author, Joshua Staton: Thank you for your time and willingness to at least consider reaching in to your community and families to help restore broken homes, dreams and lives. What I attempted to do in this edition was capture the guiding principles and overall essence of our approach to this specific ministry field. But there is only so much written words can say. While our secondary goal is to get people living clean and sober lives, our primary concern has and always will be leading and helping them through establishing their relationship with their savior, Jesus. If you need more information or encouragement, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thank you again.
