It contains a pleasant mix of personal humour, anecdotes, and examples from sports history, along with solid advice and wisdom from the Word of God. It is both entertaining and enlightening, and also instructional for our Christian youth, reminding them of who they represent and showing them an excellent perspective that is often lost. Outrun the Bear is a very practical book. From the lessons to the suggested implementation of the ideas, it offers its readers a concrete way to grow in strength--and not just our physical strength--to outrun the bear. --Marian Ysinga Christian Home Educator and Athletics Coordinator for TEACH Home Educators of Brant As a sports fan, I relived many of the moments Benno Kurvits shares in Outrun the Bear. The narrative flowed easily and I appreciated the balance between biblical message and sporting reality. I was encouraged and challenged. The chapters dealt with real issues in the world of sport and their connection to Christianity. The author sought to be practical and real, and I believe he accomplished that! The breadth of sports covered was refreshing. In terms of substance, this book has a solid message. --Mark Hudson Retired math teacher, coach, and principal at Hillfield Strathallan College Elder at Trinity Baptist Church, Burlington, Ontario Coordinator of the Sovereign Grace Fellowship of Canada Outrun the Bear is written with passion and a sincere intentionality. Benno gives such clear, yet richly intertwining, connections between sport and faith. The book is an exceptional resource for Christian educators, coaches, and athletes. The way Benno articulates the topics and links them to biblical stories is exactly the type of resource a coach/teacher drools over. There were many times while reading that I thought of a particular athlete this would help, or how this would make a great devotional, or how it opened my eyes to a new perspective. Just great! --Katie Plaisier Science and physical education teacher, Woodland Christian High School Former Redeemer Royal Varsity Athlete Everything looks different once you give your life to Christ. I've never been able to so clearly view the world of sports and competition through the lens of faith as Benno has been able to articulate. He makes a strong statement of the power of faith to shape and strengthen athletes, coaches, and everyone else in the sport experiences of life. He deftly recounts both biblical stories and sports history, shedding light on how we might view God's desires for us in the sporting world. Everyone involved in sport should read this book! --Dave Mantel Athletic Director, Redeemer University College This book's writing style makes for easy reading.
