Out of Time

Overview

A gripping thriller that weaves together multiple storylines of corruption, revenge, and survival. The novel opens at Guantánamo Bay in 2000, where disillusioned Army Sergeant Alex Smith, frustrated by his dead-end military career and desperate for money, accepts a lucrative bribe to facilitate the escape of a mysterious female assassin prisoner - Najma. Expecting to be knocked unconscious with a Taser as part of the plan, Smith instead meets a brutal end, murdered by those who used him to gain access to the facility. The orchestrator of the escape Guillermo, the ruthless head of the Siastra cartel discovered that the assassin he once employed-was not killed as he believed, but imprisoned by the CIA. He needs her alive to uncover the truth about who attacked his cartel and to exact his revenge on those responsible. Meanwhile, in eastern Washington, Biological Warfare Center special agent Jim Johnson is recovering from gunshot wounds he received in Mexico, inflicted by none other than Najma herself. Living on his ranch in Wolf Canyon, Jim has found unexpected contentment with his small family: his long-time partner Heather, a botanist; Pedro, a five-year-old Mexican boy they adopted; and Lola, a former Yaqui Indian servant who helped rescue Pedro from the cartel. This peaceful interlude represents the first time in years that Jim has been away from his dangerous work, though he struggles with restlessness beneath his contentment. The tranquil ranch life, the changing seasons, the wildlife, the simple pleasures of family dinners on the deck. But this idyllic existence is built on fragile foundations. Heather lives in constant fear that Jim will be called back to duty, while Lola remains terrified that ""the devil lady"" Najma will somehow return to threaten them. Pedro, despite his youth, clings to his new family with the desperation of someone who has already lost everything once. As Najma's escape sets events in motion, the novel promises a collision course between these two worlds-the violent, revenge-driven underworld of cartels and espionage, and the peaceful sanctuary of the ranch where Jim's family has found safety. The stage is set for a confrontation that will test whether love and loyalty can triumph over vengeance and evil, as past actions catch up with present happiness.

Reviews

So Tense. I have just finished Off The Edge. What a story, I could hardly bear to read the final chapter. The book has really alive characters who you can imagine, and vivid descriptions so you can really visualize the landscape. I can't wait to read the next. I remembered a lot about the land and wilderness, and I could just feel it as if I was there. So, so Good! Gayle Comeau Wow! I really got into the complexities of plot and simply couldn't put it down. Read well into the very early morning. It's an edge of your seat suspense thriller with a complex plot that unfolds with seemingly unrelated events in multiple locations. It presents unique challenges for the cast of heroes to discover and solve in order to rescue and save innocent lives that are in mortal danger. The ending appeals to even the romantic female reader, which is unusual for most plots in the thriller genre. Jeanne Rex Intoxicating!!! Randall Perry captivates your immediate attention from the get go. That fatal day of September 11 clearly demonstrated to America that terrorists can extend their reach well beyond their borders but Dr. Perry reminds us all that terrorism can also be generated from within. The twisting plots and dual story lines are intriguing and action packed and constantly keeps you guessing. The suspense in Off The Edge keeps you 'on the edge'... Albert Klychak In his inimitable style, Perry hooked me at once with his prologue (just as he had done with his prologue in Off the Edge) and I read the book in one sitting, unable to put it down. I was unprepared however for the attachment I would develop to his characters. There is depth and feeling in this book as Perry carefully develops and crafts his characters. Throughout this book, Perry lets us almost live in the shoes of his characters, to involve us in his soul-searching study of good and bad and what makes people do what they do. Catherine Fosnot I really really liked it! There was a tension that held me, an interest in the developed characters, and I really found it engrossing...even the violent parts. I got the book off Amazon, if I can turn the pages I can get engaged and I certainly did that. Saw an emotional literacy, which made me smile. Anne Zigmond I just finished ' Over The Line '. I didn't want it to end. All the characters that I feel are now part of my family. I don't want to say goodbye to them. All the locales that you describe so well put the reader right there. And all the different sciences that you intertwine in the plot twists make me want to know so much more. Thanks so much for the great read. I can't wait for number three. Dan Mcuen A real page turner start to finish, Out of Time satisfies on so many levels. Insightful characterisations, a wealth of knowledge about all things scientific and military, and an insider's knowledge of the area around Twisp and Winthrop, all combine to make the story come alive and leap off the page. Whilst initially struggling with any violence in the earlier Jim Johnson novels, like Heather, one of the characters in the book, I found myself starting to understand that these 'not very nice' characters do exist in the world, and that this necessitates the response of heroes such as Jim, Brush, Will, Glenda et al. Having devoured this book at lightning speed, I am now eagerly awaiting my next adrenalin dose from Perry's pen. What will the next episode bring? I can't wait. Jenny Lyons
