This Memoir of a Media Man, as it is subtitled, was therefore a book which was bound to appeal to me. The author was a son of the manse, for his evidently puritanical father was a minister of religion in the Rhondda. But despite the shadow of non-conformity, Richard Lewis childhood was a happy one. Following his period of further education, the world of television glittered in the 1960s. His career commenced as a floor manager but other more serious posts were in the offing. He found himself eventually on the production side, working on both Welsh and English language productions. The list of those with whom he worked resembles a Whos Who of Welsh television. I recall having seen a number of his critically acclaimed drama presentations, including Shadowlands, the story of the writer C. S. Lewis and Dylan, the story of the final phase of Dylan Thomas life on a reading tour in the United States. It was brilliant casting to have Ronald Lacey playing the poet for the resemblance was striking. Richard Lewis has now retired and although he is not the first media man to write his memoirs, his book is interesting and entertaining and carries a foreword by Herbert Williams.
