OverviewLike many Prison Officers, Joe comes across as someone who will not simply unquestioningly accept what he is told to do (and which therefore provides the general reader with an insight into the complex world of prison industrial relations), and is a perceptive critic of change for change's sake. As such he reveals the various pressures that HMP Grendon has increasingly come under to be more like the rest of the prison system and less like a therapeutic community - pressures which he ultimately felt unable to accept - By Professor David Wilson Description Joe's book Out of the Frying Pan is a contrast to a recent book by ex prison officer Jim Dawkins. Dawkins offers an insight into the harsher side of prison life, an often unforgiving and brutal system, with corrupt staff and prisoners who are bullied into submission, focusing on the secure containment of the notorious Charles Bronson and a campaign for his release. Joe offers a more balanced perspective of a more humane, understanding regime, undermined by punitive security measures and suffering a slow painful demise. But his work in other prisons focuses on offenders such as Myra Hindley who were condemned by society and hated by other inmates. He offers the debate that in prison all should be treated equally. He is not impressed by gangsters who claim to be on a more moral high ground than nonces (sex offenders). It is a book that will shock. It is both entertaining and controversial.
