Overview

Doors Open Ontario is a province-wide heritage tourism program that gives the public free access to explore fascinating heritage properties across Ontario. It showcases the buildings, natural spaces, infrastructure and cultural landscapes that shape and define our communities. Hosting Doors Open Ontario in your community celebrates its identity, generates volunteerism, builds interest in Ontario's heritage and drives cultural tourism and economic development opportunities. Participating sites offer free admission to the public and can include museums, places of worship, public, cultural or institutional buildings, private businesses, trails and natural areas. In 2023, the province-wide theme is Food - exploring Ontario's historical traditions of food production as well as the spaces that shape and define our culinary traditions today. London Ontario was the first photo book I put together. I was thrilled to go with my sister, Shirley, and her husband, Edward to visit this city once again. 427 Wing is located in a 1940 WWII Airmen's Canteen, on the grounds of London International Airport. We learned about rationing for the general public, and meals that servicemen ate. The Jet Aircraft Museum is an aviation museum specializing in Canadian Forces jet aircraft. The museum is located at the London International Airport. The Red Knight was a Canadian air force aerobatic display aircraft and we got to see it taxi on the runway and take off in flight. The Secrets of Radar Museum is located near the London International Airport. The museum was created to tell the story of the Canadian World War II veterans who were recruited into a top-secret project involving radar. Fanshawe Pioneer Village is an open-air museum located in the Fanshawe Conservation Area in London. The village communicates the history of rural communities in the former townships in Middlesex County from 1820 to 1920 and the founding and development of the City of London up to 1840. The property of Grosvenor Lodge consists of a two-and-a-half story white-brick building, a carriage house and a garden house. All three buildings were constructed in 1853. Eldon House is a historic house and museum, the oldest continued residence in the city of London. Eldon House was inhabited by the family of John and Amelia Harris from 1834 until they gave it to the City of London in 1959 (125 years).
