Overview

As a former elementary teacher, Kathy Thomas understands the voice of children, and she has shared their important ideas through the story Our Golden Gloves. While teaching, Kathy used the Golden Rule as a credo in her classroom and encouraged her students to try to remember it each day as they interacted with one another. A finger play, as shown in the book, was recited by the children as a reminder of this special rule. Her students came to realize that this message was universal. While engaging in a social studies unit entitled Peace Around the World, the children learned about cultures and traditions among people in faraway places. They began to understand that despite our global differences, we also have something in common with one another. Kathy and her students combined these concepts and created a class book entitled Our Golden Gloves. The original version was part of her classroom library and during quiet reading time, this book was always in someone's hands and was a favorite in her classroom! Today Kathy's young nephew and niece, Matthew and McKenzie Banks, helped to revise Our Golden Gloves. They incorporated their own renderings of the messages from her former students and designed creative illustrations for the new book. Matthew and McKenzie were students at the same school where Kathy taught and where these ideas emerged. Enjoy your travels around the world as you engage in this wonderful new version of Our Golden Gloves, which was created by children for children.
