Our Global Future

Overview

Many books on global sustainability emphasize environmental science and are written for lower-level undergraduates. Others are academic compilations written for university faculty. In contrast, Our Global Future is a reader for upper-level college undergraduates learning about global sustainability. It pulls together the best current writings and case studies on the many interacting problems that face our world today, including those in the developing world. The text also addresses solutions to these problems. Dr. Larom's introductions to each section help readers understand the connections between these issues, and place them in a larger context that is not purely scientific. Written from a perspective favoring local autonomy, ecological design, and science-based policy, the text takes issues of global sustainability and gives them a human face, showing how these issues shape lives and culture. David Larom grew up in Idaho, Oregon, New Mexico, Kenya and the Eritrean Highlands. He has a BA (Liberal Arts) from St. John's College in Santa Fe, and an MS (Applied Mechanics) and Ph.D. (Environmental Sciences) from the University of Virginia. Dr. Larom has published in journals as diverse as Impact Mechanics, Experimental Biology, Acoustical Society of America and Animal Psychology. He spent eight years as a Senior Engineer and Product Manager at Qualcomm, Inc, and now lectures at San Diego State University, teaching courses like Our Global Future, Asian Environmental Issues, and Food Justice and Food Security.
