OverviewOtello ossia l'Africano di Venezia is a dramma per musica in three acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Francesco Berio di Salsa, based on William Shakespeare's play Othello. It was first performed in Naples at the Teatro del Fondo on 4 December 1816. Rossini's Otello, while following the general outline of Shakespeare's play, differs in many details. Iago is not the villain of the opera, but rather Roderigo, jealous of Otello and Desdemona's love. The opera places much more emphasis on the love triangle between Otello, Desdemona, and Roderigo, whereas Shakespeare's play gives more attention to the relationship between Otello and Iago.
