Orthotic Design and Fabrication for the Upper Extremity: A Practical Guide

Overview

Providing foundational knowledge for the use of orthoses as an intervention in occupational therapy practice, this unique guide to orthotic design and fabrication offers clear step-by-step guidance supported by case studies, example patterns, and instructional videos. The first chapters detail the anatomical knowledge and background information required before molding orthoses on clients. Each chapter then explores a specific part of the upper extremity, describing common clinical diagnoses before highlighting typical orthoses that might be utilized to immobilize and protect it. Detailing the application of biomechanical, anatomic and clinical constructs, this new edition has been updated with new chapters on pediatric orthotic fabrication and 3D printed orthoses and adaptive aids. Other chapters have also been updated, with additional information on prefabricated orthoses and information on where to purchase them. Also featuring multiple choice and short review questions to help with exam preparation, this is the ideal entry-level resource offering both text and video in illustrating this important area. It will be key reading for both Occupational Therapy students and practitioners.

Reviews

""Authors Schofield and Schwartz have combined their experiences as expert teachers and clinicians to create an extremely accessible learning resource for this generation of learners. As an educator for 30 years, I continually hear from students that they are “hands-on” learners, and I have witnessed them watching the videos in the classroom while they construct their own orthoses. This text provides both background information and application in a way that meets every learning style."" — Dr. Chris Merchant, Past Program Director and Associate Professor, Midwestern University, Glendale, Arizona Campus ""This textbook is infused with colorful photos and diagrams that highlight a variety of different orthotic interventions. Each chapter examines a specific part of the upper extremity and provides detailed explanations of various clinical conditions that benefit from orthotic intervention. Video demonstrations accompany each chapter. Students and novice clinicians can benefit from the explanations, diagrams, videos, and accompanying questions."" — Pat McKee, Associate Professor Emeritus Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, University of Toronto, Canada
