Hutchinson, Doody's Book Reviews, April, 2017) Author InformationDr. Melvin Makhni is a chief resident in orthopedic surgery at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, NY and will be doing his fellowship training in spine surgery at the Columbia University Spine Hospital. After completing his undergraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he received his combined MD/MBA from Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School in Boston, MA. Dr. Makhni has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications, chapters, and national presentations. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), North American Spine Society (NASS), and the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS). His research interests include improving treatment of complex spinal deformity and degenerative conditions, the application of robotic and nano-technologies to spine surgery, as well as applying business fundamentals to help improve the management of orthopedic emergencies in the developing world. Dr. Eric Makhni is an orthopedic surgeon and shoulder and sports medicine specialist at the Henry Ford Hospital and Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Dr. Makhni completed his sports medicine fellowship training at Rush University in Chicago, IL, where he served as an assistant team physician for the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago White Sox. Prior to his fellowship, he completed his combined MD/MBA degree at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School, in Boston, MA as well as his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Columbia University in New York City, NY. Dr. Makhni has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and national presentations in orthopedic surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). His research interests include shoulder and elbow injuries inoverhead athletes, outcomes reporting, and cost-effectiveness research. Dr. Eric Swart is an orthopedic surgeon and trauma medicine specialist at the University of Massachusetts Hospital in Worcester, MA. Dr. Swart completed his orthopaedic trauma fellowship training at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, and prior to fellowship studied engineering and medicine in Boston, MA as Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Columbia University in New York City, NY. Dr. Swart has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications and national presentations in orthopedic surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA). His research interests include healthcare economics and health policy, high energy trauma, injury prevention, and systems-based care. Charles S. Day, MD,MBA is an Associate Professor in Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School (HMS). In addition to his clinical endeavors, Dr. Day was the Director of the Orthopaedic curriculum at Harvard Medical School from 2007 - 2014, and the Fellowship Director for the BIDMC/Harvard Orthopaedic Hand Surgery Fellowship from 2005 to 2014. His research interests include hand surgery clinical outcomes, orthopaedic practice management, and medical education. He has been recognized for his educational endeavors both at BIDMC and Harvard Medical School, and serves on various HMS committees. He has received multiple awards both nationally and internationally. He was the 2011 recipient of the Sterling Bunnell Award in Hand Surgery from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the first orthopaedic hand surgeon from Boston to receive this award.
