Ornamente in Bewegung: Die Deckendekoration Der Grossen Querhalle Im Grab Von Djefai-Hapi I. in Assiut

Overview

English summary: In the course of the German-Egyptian archaeological and epigraphic fieldwork in Asyut/Middle Egypt from 2012 to 2014, a series of ceiling decorations were discovered in the grave of the ancient regional governor of the area, named Djefai-Hapi I (c. 1900 BC), whose arrangement, motifs, and monumentality offered a wholly new perspective on Egyptian design during the Middle Kingdom. As a consequence of considerable contamination, these paintings have generally not been well represented in the scholarly literature but, thanks to Egyptian restoration efforts, the paintings have undergone a successful partial restoration. In his book Ornaments in Movement, Jochem Kahl places considerable attention on these ceiling decorations and examines their meaning, the movement of individual motifs, as well as the broader context of ceiling-art design in Egypt and the Aegean world during from the Middle Kingdom, through Egyptian antiquity and up to London in the 19th century. An analysis of the color pigments that were used, an index of personal names as well as a table of colors and computer reconstructions offer an extensive overview of the ceiling decorations from the great transverse hall from Djefai-Hapi tomb.
