Worked initially for the Instituto Geologico del Peru and for the Instituto Nacional de Investigacion y Fomento Mineros (1946- 1951). Then worked for the Cerro de Pasco Corporation as Geologist (1951-1954), Assistant Chief Geologist (1956-1957) and Chief Geologist (1958-1963). Studied at Harvard University (1954-1956) and later joined the Geology Department at Harvard University as Lecturer (1963-1966), as Associate Professor (1966-1969), as Full Professor of Mining Geology (1969-1981), and as Harry C. Dudley Professor of Economic Geology (1981-1995). Thereafter Emeritus Harry C. Dudley Professor of Economic Geology.In 1968 named Knight Comendador Merit Order for Distinguished Services in Peru. Recipient of the A. von Humboldt research award (1992-93 and 2003-04). Received the 2000 MeritAward from the Colegio de Ingenieros del Peru and in 2005 the Torch Habich award from the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniereia del Peru. In 1996 became a member of the Society of Economic Geologists (President for1988-89). Is a member of the Geological Society of America and an honorary member of the Sociedad Geologica del Peru.
