Diya Baker is an Ophthalmology registrar at East Kent NHS Foundation Trust. Over the past five years, he has actively mentored junior colleagues, supporting their academic development and preparation for Royal College of Ophthalmology exams. He has collaborated with foundation doctors on teaching sessions, quality improvement projects, presentations, and research publications. Diya recently completed a Postgraduate Master’s in Clinical Medicine at Homerton College, University of Cambridge. He is committed to clinical education, regularly participating in national and international teaching seminars and guiding peers through the ophthalmology specialty application process. Joe Abbott FRCOphth is a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmic Surgeon and Glaucoma Lead at Birmingham Children’s Hospital since 2012. A Nottingham Medical School graduate, he trained in the West Midlands and completed fellowships at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Moorfields Eye Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital. One of few surgeons globally with fellowships in both paediatric ophthalmology and glaucoma, he is an expert in childhood glaucoma, retinoblastoma, paediatric cataract, craniofacial diseases, and medical education. Joe advises The Ogden Trust, serves on the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust’s scientific advisory committee, and holds honorary academic roles at Aston University and University of Leicester. He is President-Elect of the UK Paediatric Glaucoma Society and a former President of the Midlands Ophthalmological Society. He has received the West Midlands School of Ophthalmology Trainer of the Year award. Nada Alfahad is a medical student at the University of Birmingham pursuing an MB-PhD focused on ophthalmology and research. Her work explores mitochondrial and metabolic responses to infection in ocular cell lines, particularly microbial keratitis and fluid gel technology. She holds a First-Class Honours degree in Clinical Sciences and has published in journals such as Nature Communications and British Journal of Pharmacology. Nada has presented at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Congress and completed clinical audits. She has volunteered with the Khmer Sight Foundation in Cambodia and completed a 10-week observership at the Singapore Eye Research Institute. She leads as President of the Birmingham Ophthalmology Society and serves as communications officer for the Junior Association for the Study of Medical Education. She also supervises final-year projects and edits for TeachMePhysiology. Her accolades include the Kennedy Network Skills and Development Travel Award. Niha Hussain is a junior doctor with interests in ophthalmology, radiology, and primary care. She is currently in the specialised foundation programme in Leicestershire, undertaking a research block focused on improving ophthalmic diagnostic techniques. With 10 peer-reviewed publications, she earned her university’s Distinction in Research award. During medical school, she trained at Birmingham Midlands Eye Centre and volunteered at Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital in India, a top global ophthalmic institution. Niha served as President of her university’s ophthalmology society (2021–22) and led the UK’s first and largest student-led ophthalmology conference in 2022. She also developed and taught a four-month ophthalmology series for clinical-year students preparing for finals.
