OverviewBased upon true family stories and letters, One Tragic June describes the intense love story and fate of a Plain country woman, June, and a man not of her faith, Peter, who entered the army in World War II. Their different backgrounds, upbringings, and philosophies made their romance improbable and unacceptable in the Plain religion, yet they shared a common desire to carve their own destinies versus those prescribed by their families and communities. Due to their unique bond and events, their families were forced to redefine their own lives, which resulted in a lasting friendship. The echoes of June and Peter's silent footsteps resonate for generations. And when I read the preface dated 1964, I was especially drawn in by intense curiosity! As intended! The preface set the scene very well. Then I started reading Chapter 1 and was intrigued about June going to NYC. I wondered why. At some point, the thought crossed my mind about why she was going in 1944, but then I continued reading. Having dates and locations on the chapters was critical! Whenever I read anything, I feel a need to be oriented in time and space--what's the date of the action? And where are things happening? By Chapter 3, I found out about Plain. This was a term I hadn't known before reading this book. Somehow, I missed this reference all my life! I'd known about Amish people and other religious folks who have withdrawn from modern life, but I'd not heard about Plain. The early description in the book came at just the right time. I found I couldn't put the book down, so I finished it quickly. It's very well written, suspenseful, and a brilliant use of family history to create engaging fiction. Rarely does a novel linger in the mind quite like this one. Shipman has crafted a deeply moving narrative that bridges the gap between rigid tradition and the universal ache of the human heart. From the very first chapter, I felt less like a reader and more like a silent witness to the Price family's journey, sharing in their brief joys and their most profound sorrows. If you are looking for a ""page-turner"" that prioritizes both historical texture and raw emotional honesty, I cannot recommend this book enough. Weeks later, I am still reflecting on the ending. It is a haunting, beautiful reminder of the cost of following one's heart. Author Information""One Tragic June"" marks Jean Pugh Shipman's explosive debut novel, joining her two critically edited works on innovation and collaboration in health sciences libraries. Born and raised in a small Pennsylvania town steeped in Plain religion tradition, Jean spent nearly 40 years as a medical librarian-driven by a fierce desire to break free and live in the city. Her novel's gripping, raw story is pulled straight from her mother's family history and authentic letters, many laid bare in the pages. Now, Jean thrives in the wild beauty of Virginia's foothills alongside her husband, Mark, and their friendly cat. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
