One Scan Saved My Life: How One Woman's Story Will Change the Way We Detect Lung Cancer

Overview

A powerful call to reform how we screen for the deadliest cancer, proving that early detection can save lives long before symptoms begin. She was forty-four, the picture of health - a devoted mother of four, a daily runner, a kale enthusiast who never smoked a day in her life. But when she signed up for a routine health scan ""just to be safe,"" she discovered the unthinkable: fast-growing stage I lung cancer. In her searing and hopeful memoir, Shira Kupperman Boehler tells the story of how one moment upended everything - and how it may have saved her life. As she navigates surgery, recovery, and the emotional aftershocks of a diagnosis that ""shouldn't"" have happened, she uncovers a staggering truth: by the time most lung cancers are found, it's too late - not because we can't detect them earlier, but because our health system doesn't. Part personal journey, part urgent call to action, One Scan Saved My Life shines a light on the silent epidemic affecting millions of Americans - including nonsmokers, women, and young adults - who are excluded from current screening guidelines. With clarity and conviction and backed by the input of medical and policy experts, Shira makes a powerful case for expanding early-detection policies and rethinking how we define ""risk."" A story of resilience and the power of speaking up, One Scan Saved My Life asks one simple question that could change everything: What if prevention didn't come too late?

Her riveting story should be grasped by all."" --Dr. Mehmet Oz, nationally recognized thoracic surgeon and President Trump's Head of Medicare and Medicaid ""As a physician and chief medical officer, nothing makes me happier than helping our patients. Her experience will change things for so many."" --Ben Kornitzer, CMO of Aetna ""Shira's story is the perfect example of why we created Function and Ezra. We are excited to amplify her story and work together to save more lives.""--Jonathan Swerdlin, cofounder and CEO of Function Health ""With the rise of early onset cancers, there needs to be a reconsideration of conventional screening guidelines and an expansion of the definition of 'high risk.' 'Early detection saves lives' is a mantra we live by in medicine; it is incumbent on the medical community as well as policy makers to ensure that we are capturing as many survivable cancers as possible.""--Dr. Natalie Azar, medical contributor for NBC News and assistant clinical professor of medicine and rheumatology at NYU Langone ""In this deeply personal and moving memoir, Shira Boehler shares her journey through a shocking, unexpected diagnosis of lung cancer, shattering the myth that this disease affects only smokers, men, and older people. This invaluable book, animated by her powerful advocacy, provides a critical call to action for more widely available early detection methods, the urgent need to focus on understudied sex differences in the disease, and increased public awareness. Her message: Scientific research, cutting-edge technology, and expanded screening will save lives.""--Susan Blumenthal, MD, First Deputy Assistant Secretary for Women's Health and Former US Assistant Surgeon General
