One Rogue Raider: Death of the White Swan

Overview

""Historically fascinating and well researched . . ."" -D. R. Bailey, bestselling author of Dawn of Hope ""A lively dramatization of a unique naval drama that still stands on its own merits."" -Jon Guttman, research director, History.Net, award winning historian and author of Defiance at Sea In late June 1914, two gunshots in Sarajevo have changed the course of history. Archduke Franz Ferdinand is dead, and World War I begins. Across the world, the German dreadnought SMS Emden is sent to the Far East to disrupt Allied shipping. The Emden is outnumbered sixty to one, but the men on board will do their duty. What follows is a three-month cat-and-mouse chase with the Royal Navy. Under the leadership of ""gentleman pirate"" Captain Karl Friedrich Max von Müller, the elusive ""White Swan of the East"" manages to sink sixteen civilian Allied vessels without a single loss of life on either side before meeting her demise. Solidly grounded in history, One Rogue Raider imagines the thoughts and dreams and deeds of Emden's crew, her pursuers, and First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill himself, bringing to life what was perhaps the last instance of a conflict at sea where tonnage sunk and body counts did not trump human decency and honor.

Reviews

""At the onset of World War I, the dreadnought SMS Emden, dubbed 'White Swan of the East, ' is the lone German warship in the vast Indian and western Pacific Oceans dominated by the British Navy. Based on actual events, Larry Allen Lindsey delivers the extraordinary WWI nautical tale of the White Swan of the East with historical figures, exotic locales, and compelling insight."" -CAPT Ted Digges, SC, USN (Ret.), vice chair, Navy Supply Corps Foundation ""A lively dramatization of a unique naval drama that still stands on its own merits."" -Jon Guttman, research director, History.Net, award winning historian and author of Defiance at Sea ""Historically fascinating and well researched, One Rogue Raider is a very readable novel that keeps you turning the page to find out what happens next. A rich tapestry weaved to keep it entertaining and also informative, I liked the multiple viewpoints, which allow one to see different sides of the same story. It shows us the dichotomy between duty, loyalty to a cause and country, and personal beliefs that may be at odds with those. I would give it five stars on Amazon."" -D. R. Bailey, bestselling author of Dawn of Hope ""Lindsey masterfully brings to life the tensions and strategy of naval warfare aboard a World War I coal-burning German cruiser patrolling the vast Far East. His firsthand shipboard naval service during wartime lends authenticity to the narrative, immersing readers in the relentless challenges of life aboard the Emden. Stranded thousands of miles of home with no set return date, the crew must constantly search for coal while navigating the perils of war at sea."" -Ron McManus, award-winning author of The Chameleon, The Envelope, and The Drone Enigma
