He graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1956 with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. Following graduation, he was employed in the chemical industry until retirement at age seventy-three. He met Zen Master Suigan Yogo in the summer of 1982 and remained in contact with him until Suigan's death in 1996. Mitsuo now lives with his wife in the suburbs of Yokohama.
