Overview

Horses bring them together and their future looks rosy-it's the present they can't handle. A summertime stint at a small animal clinic takes veterinary student Lena away from her beloved horses, but at an endurance ride she finds horses- and her ideal man, veteran pilot Blake. She decides she can't do without him and his world- after finishing vet school, that is. Blake's history doesn't help his attitude when Lena heads back to vet school. Things don't improve with the distance, or Lena's workload. His green eyed monsters strain the already-tense situation, but at least he has his horses and dogs to keep him warm. A grueling endurance race tests their stallion-and their relationship. Can they make it?

After reading her amazing Long Trail historical series, to switch to her contemporary Once Upon a Vet School series has been so much fun. Her knowledge and love of horses shines through as she takes Lena through her experiences in going through school to become an equine veterinarian. This tale finds Lena having volunteered to help at a fifty mile horse endurance competition. Glad to take a break from training in small animal veterinary (yes mainly dogs and cats and she is allergic to cats!) she feels at home being around all the horses. She meets one of the competitors Blake, who is a veteran pilot, having gone through many experiences that still haunt him. An attraction sparks and leads them through many ups and downs in trying to maintain a long distance relationship. The author is able to make the characters almost three dimensional and you can feel Lena and Blake's emotions. I enjoyed this story just as much as the first one and can only hope the next book in this series comes out soon to continue Lena's journey! This is wonderful series about the path to becoming a veterinarian, the love of horses and sweet romance.The characters in this book, Lena and Blake will grab your heart. Long distance romances are difficult. Determined to find a way to a happiness, they experience life's bumps along the way. The story develops at a nice pace and was very enjoyable. I would love to see this and the other books made into a Hallmark series. It would be perfect.

Author Information

Lizzi grew up riding wild in the Santa Cruz Mountain redwoods, became an equine veterinarian at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and practiced in the Gold and Pony Express Country of California before emigrating to New Zealand. She has two wonderful boys, a grandbaby, and an awesome partner in that sea of green. When she's not writing, she's swinging a rapier or shooting a bow in medieval garb, riding or driving a carriage, playing in the garden on her hobby farm, singing, cooking, or looking into a horse's mouth in her equine veterinary dental practice. She is multiply published and awarded in special interest magazines and veterinary periodicals. With her debut novel, A Long Trail Rolling, she was Finalist 2013 RWNZ Great Beginnings; Winner 2014 RWNZ Pacific Hearts Award for the unpublished full manuscript; Winner 2015 RWNZ Koru Award for Best First Novel and third in Koru Long Novel section; and finalist in the 2015 Best Indie Book Award.
