Overview

Our lives are a journey where we continually learn about ourselves and the world in which we have found ourselves, and then we die. This anyway, is the model given to us by the Greek-Egyptian poet Constantine Cavafy in his poem, Ithaka. This splendid travelogue tells us that the goal of life is unimportant; the essential thing is to have enjoyed the journey, and to have profited from the experience of living to have discovered who you are and what you like. In this way, you will be in a better place to deal with that ultimate reality of life that is death. The voyage to Ithaka is a unique experience for each of us, and in my view it is better to arrive at life's destination with some wonderful memories to revisit as you pass into the silent dark night, than curse and rage impotently against the inevitable dying of the light. In this volume, the author explores his spiritual nature. That is, the author's discovery of the importance of a spiritual or, at least, a holistic view of Nature in achieving a balanced, contented life. In these pages, the author passes through decadence, debauchery, drug-inspired megalomania and illness, and as a consequence comes to realize the importance of staying at home to cultivate one's garden, and of enjoying music. The subject of this book is time and its ambiguity, and how we use our short allotted span of this precious, conserved quantity. The major theme of this volume is the message of the Buddha that, there is no way to happiness; happiness is the way.
