OverviewThis work illustrates the formation and growth of the Royal Library collection in the chronological order in which the treasures were added. The major emphasis is on the period before 1830, during which the Royal Library acquired the greater part of its wealth of older books and manuscripts that represent its strength in an international context. An important characteristics of the ""Library of Kings"" in this period of foundation was its status as the king's private library, into which were incorporated books and manuscripts presented personally to the monarch - gifts, dedication or presentation copies. In addition, under the absolute monarchs, the library was an expression of the glory of the kings as the patrons of literature and science, and thus received large and lavish purchases appropriate to this royal role. In the following period major developments are described up to the present day with emphasis on the building up of the special collections.
