Overview

They don't make them like Frederick Burnaby anymore. With Russia and Turkey preparing for war and the implications are global. Captain Burnaby of the elite ""Blues"" regiment heads into the Anatolian interior to assess the Russian threat, the Turkish resistance and the looming clash of the Muslim and Christian worlds. More than a century later, Burnaby's thousand-mile trek into the twilight of the Ottoman Empire still reads like tale told at end of an epic dinner party. Part witty travelogue, cultural insights, and charming intelligence report, On Horseback Through Asia Minor is a classic of the Great Game that is still as entertaining as the day it was written.

Author Information

Colonel Frederick Burnaby was a soldier, writer, covert intelligence officer, hot air balloonist, practical joker, and hero to a generation of Victorian England. He stood for parliament twice. He died at the Battle of Abu Klea in 1885. Poetry was written about it. Richard Murff has covered humanitarian issues across Latin America, Iraq, Ukraine, Libya and Clarksdale, MS, to name a few places. Murff spent his early career in advertising and marketing for a handful of global corporations. His less impressive jobs included writing sermons for a preacher who is very likely certifiably insane. After several years in the financial sector specializing in capital markets for government debt and collateralized securities, the economy blew-up. Murff is the Creative Director at Burnaby. His work has appeared in The Bitter Southerner, Delta Magazine, Front Street, The American Spectator, Sail, The Daily News, Oxford Town, and others. He lives in Memphis, Tennessee with his wife and daughter. The Mint Julep cookie was created in his honor.
