There's a bear out there in the countryside./ He prays where he stays, and it ain't in his lair./ He's a musical, musical mystical bear. The operative phrase, of course, is He prays where he stays, and Mr. Fox's message is that everyone, if he prays, must pray precisely where he stays. For prayer is not saying prayers, or withdrawing from the world, or asking God for blessings, or even talking to God: it is responding to life - a radical response, involving participation, creativity; giving. Fox interprets radical in its literal sense: a root response to life means to enjoy life for the sake of enjoying life, and to uproot injustice simply because injustice exists. To pray, then, means simply to be human in the best meaning of that term; i.e., to achieve the fullest possible development of the human personality: All creation adorns itself continually for God. . . . Ugliness is an insult to God. What Mr. Fox preaches, in effect, is a sort of humanism which answers the needs of both activism and contemplation and in which there is room for every personal disposition and talent. He calls it prayer and it makes considerably more sense than the old kind. (Kirkus Reviews)
