Overview

Seeing the invisible, measuring the infinite, controlling motion, representing absence, drawing the horizon: these were the aspirations not only of mystics and magicians, but also of those mathematicians, philosophers and artists who, between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, cultivated the audacity to venture beyond the Herculean pillars of late medieval science. In this volume, Cusanus and Leonardo are presented as examples of the pursuit of those aspirations in an attempt to push the boundaries of rational knowledge not by denying reason but by enhancing its possibilities to the point of contradicting reason itself. The goal, which both of them share with other contemporaries, was to represent with scientific coherence an expanded hyper-reality that also included the realms of the possible and the thinkable.

Annarita Angelini insegna Storia della filosofia e Filosofia e Filosofia e teoria delle immagini all'Universita di Bologna. Le pubblicazioni delle quali e autrice hanno affrontato gli intrecci tra filosofia, scienze e arti nella cultura europea nell'eta moderna, con un'attenzione alle questioni del metodo, alla trasformazione dei modelli enciclopedici e alla genesi di un pensiero simbolico. Si e inoltre occupata della ricezione rinascimentale e moderna del pensiero antico e, principalmente, della tradizione neoplatonica. Da alcuni anni si interessa, insieme a Rossella Lupacchini, delle correlazioni tra modelli della produzione artistica e simbolica rinascimentale e della cultura scientifica moderna e contemporanea.
