OverviewThis book describes the growing interaction between the exploitation of natural resources, in this case oil, and the protection of human rights. The Democratic Republic of Congo appears to be a privileged hunting ground for the oil giants.Indeed, while activities linked to the exploitation of natural resources are likely to promote economic development or technological progress, they very often generate human rights violations. In Moanda, where oil is extracted, noise pollution, gas flaring and toxic waste are at the root of the severe degradation of the natural environment, to the detriment of the populations who suffer from oil exploitation without receiving the alleged benefits. In this case, the Congolese state does not seem to be effectively fulfilling its role as protector of individuals whose rights are affected by oil and gas activities.
