Author Information

Matthew Crow, Ph.D., is Associate Professor and Chair of Justice Studies at the University of West Florida. He earned his Ph.D. from the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida State University. He is a specialist in policing and judicial processes. His research on criminal sentencing, police use of force, criminal justice education, reentry, and fish and wildlife conservation policing has appeared in leading journals, including American Journal of Criminal Justice, Criminal Justice Review, Journal of Criminal Justice, Journal of Criminal Justice Education, Organization and Environment, Police Quarterly, Policing, and Women and Criminal Justice. Dr. Crow served on program committees for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the American Society of Criminology and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Southern Criminal Justice Association. John Smykla, PhD, is Distinguished University Professor at the University of West Florida, Pensacola, Florida. He earned his Ph.D. from the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. He is a corrections specialist. His research focuses on adult institution and community-based corrections, capital punishment, and comparative criminal justice. His publications have appeared in national and regional criminal justice and criminology journals. Among his recent texts are Corrections in the 21st Century, Sixth Edition with Frank Schmalleger (McGraw-Hill) and Probation, Parole, and Community-Based Corrections: Treatment, Supervision, and Evidence-Based Corrections with Gerald Bayens (McGraw-Hill). Dr. Smykla has also edited two volumes (Coed Prison, Human Sciences Press, 1980 and Intermediate Sanctions with William Selke, Anderson Publishing, 1995). Dr. Smykla is a former Senior Fulbright Scholar to Argentina and Uruguay. His co-authored dataset Executions in the United States, 1608-2008: The Espy File, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, is one of the most frequently requested data files from the University of Michigan’s Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. He served the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences as program committee chair in 1997 and president of the Southern Criminal Justice Association (SCJA) in 2000. SCJA honored Smykla in 1997 as Educator of the Year. In 2011, the University of West Florida named him Distinguished University Professor in honor of his contributions to the criminal justice and criminology literature.
