OverviewIt has often been held that missions rode on the coattails of colonialism. In the case of the British administered island of Singapore, the pluriform missions of the Methodist missionaries demonstrated industry, innovation, and integrity, which in many ways question the charge of compromise and complicity between missions and colonialism. This will serve as a standard reference on this period of Singapore's church history and deserves a wide readership. --Hwa Yung, Bishop Emeritus, The Methodist Church in Malaysia Of Merchants and Missions is a very well-researched work and an important contribution to Singapore's mission history. As a Methodist pastor in Singapore, it is most inspiring to read of the work and lives of the early missionary pioneers, without whom the picture would be very different today. At the same time, it is a reminder not to bask in former glory but to be challenged to do the same for today's society as the pioneer missionaries did for theirs. Highly recommended! --Edmund Koh, Pastor-in-charge, Holy Covenant Methodist Church (Singapore) """""This careful study of the early growth of Methodism in Singapore contains many details hitherto unavailable.
