Overview

The present volume presents results of a study on a formerly large metapopulation of the Scarce Swallowtail in South-Western Germany. In particular, habitat preferences of eggs and larval stages are quantified and the general decline and finally the extinction of the population is thoroughly documented. It is a typical example of the effects of insufficient conservation measures, which mainly resulted from wrong prioritisation and from ignoring available knowledge.
