Overview

"Bad Freienwalde - Frankfurt an der Oder - Fürstenwalde - Strausberg The Oderbruch was formerly marshy land that was flooded annually by the Oder. The lowland with numerous floodplains, dykes and streams is about 60 kilometers long and between 10 and 15 kilometers wide. It has a total area of ??640 square kilometers and is partly well below the level of the Oder. Settlements already existed in the 4th century, but only on the island-like elevations. The first documented mention of the settlements in the Oderbruch come from the 13th and 14th centuries, when, for example, the towns of Wriezen, Freienwalde, Letschin, Alttrebbin and Altlewin were named. In addition to fishing, pasture and animal husbandry were the main occupations of the residents. The planned draining of the Oderbruch for the purpose of land expansion was realized in the mid-18th century on the initiative of the Prussian King Frederick II. The river bed of the Oder and the branching tributaries were laid on the eastern border of the Oderbruch. Extensive dike systems should protect against flooding. West of the Oderbruch lies the hilly Oberbarnim with its extensive forest areas. It arose in the last Ice Age period, around 15,000 BC. End moraine arches up to 90 meters high were left behind. The meltwater collected in the depressions of the ground moraines. Bad Freienwalde, the oldest spa and bathing resort in Mark Brandenburg, lies in the border area between the Oberbarnim forest hill country and the Oderbruch. Due to its location in the hilly surroundings, the city was called the ""mountain city"" by the poet Theodor Fontane. The culturally interesting border town of Frankfurt (Oder) was founded at the beginning of the 13th century. ?Established by German merchants in the middle of the 19th century at a convenient ford on the Oder. In 1945 Frankfurt was occupied by the Red Army and as a result the Dammvorstadt (today Slubice) fell to Poland. In 1951, work began on rebuilding the city center that had almost completely burned down in 1945. In the 1980s, the historic buildings were extensively restored, which was followed by inner city densification numerous fairs economic. Strausberg, the green city on Straussee, has been the weekend destination of many Berliners for more than 100 years who wanted to relax in the forest and lake area. But tourists from further afield also enjoy the idyllic tranquil lakes, which are ideal for swimming, rowing or fishing. The most important long-distance cycle routes, some of which are included in this map, are the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route, the R1 European Cycle Route, the Spree Cycle Route and the Brandenburg Tour. The most beautiful regional tours on this map include the Oderbruchbahn cycle path, on which you can cycle through northern Oderbruch on a former railway embankment.
