Lover's Rescue by Freeman J Wong, Toronto, Canada Rayhan left Bridle Mall with roses twined, In glossy wrap, by plastic sheen well lined. He sniffed their scent and blew a kiss so dear, As though to Lilly, held his heartbeat near. He took swift strides toward the new Finch Road: ""This bus won't do! You see that big full load!"" Next bus preferred, but lunch at half ere twelve Forced him aboard; no pause for dreams to shelve. He jumped in, though 'twas packed from wall to wall; No seat remained, he stood through rise and fall. He clutched the blooms, breathed deep their Lilly-scent; He smiled, lost in the joy they would present. The bus lurched forth, then raced at speed uncurbed, Till brakes screamed hard-the man's balance disturbed. He nearly crashed, but saved his blooms instead, Then stood, pants fallen, heat of shame ahead. ""Oh God!"" the girl beside him screamed aloud; All eyes turned toward him within the crowd. They saw him standing there in underpants; His trousers pooled around his shoes 'mongst rants. Face reddening, he yanked them up with speed; A wary woman warned him to take heed. She grabbed her cellphone, readied it to call. ""My belt has broken!"" Rayhan begged of all. Thus she stepped closer, verified the claim: The buckle had detached, 'twas not the same! The nosy passenger now laughed outright, Put phone away while pondering the sight. To fix the belt with flowers in one hand And pants in other, he appeared well-planned. Stems thrust beneath his armpit for firm hold, Then shoulder dropped, pants pinned tight 'gainst his fold. Both hands thus freed, he tried the strap's repair, But missing pin defeated his despair. He tried without the buckle: 'twas too short; Cool sweat beaded and streamed in salty port. Lilly will understand, he told his heart; Her parents' judgment fed his fear's sharp dart. Would they accept a boy of lesser means? Or would their banker world reject poor teens? His choices slim, Rayhan stuffed belt in hold, Then bent to loosen right shoe's knotted fold. He pulled the lace, unsure if 'twould prevail: ""Strong save two flimsy points, worn-out and frail."" Through belt loops slipped, he drew the lace up tight; Thank God! It beat the belt that failed in blight! The strangers' eyes beamed joy at job well done; This lad's quick-witted grace had brightly won. Now pants secured, he rose, both eyes alight, The bus exploded in applause's might. ""Unreal!"" he breathed, amazed at fortune's shift, A shoelace triumphed where fine new belts drift. At Rose-and-Rose on Bloor, Rayhan arrived, His cell displayed eleven, time derived. The hostess led to Room Three, private, grand, Where Lilly waited, art-absorbed, so spanned. She wore new elegance, in thoughtful gaze, At painting's pair engaged in love's strange maze. Back turned, she missed his entry through the door, So Rayhan planned a game to cheer her more.
