OverviewOccupational Exposure to Manufactured Nanomaterials in the Construction Industry: Strategy and Guidelines provides practical guidelines for the safe use of manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) in construction. Although the use of MNMs -particularly in construction- is increasing, there is little information available on the toxicity and biodistribution of MNMs or their potential to induce adverse reactions to human health. She is a summa-cum-laude graduate in Chemical Engineering (Modeling of industrial scale NOx absorption systems) and Distinguished Euskoiker Professor (Prevention of PCDD/Fs emission from MSWI through enhanced control of copper-bearing submicron aerosol). She has more than 25 years of research experience in advanced systems and devices for industrial air pollution control, including electrostatic precipitation, filtration, and hybrid systems. She spent a sabbatical leave in the Particle Technology Laboratory (U. Of Minnesota) with Prof. P. McMurry's team working on advanced real-time techniques for the characterization of nanometric aerosols. Her current research focuses on high-T aerosol technology and its applications to the prevention and abatement of undesired aerosols in industrial sectors (cement production, iron and steelmaking, waste incineration, biomass thermal processing, workplace aerosols). She actively promotes the dialogue between academia and industry as well as networking of junior scientists. An example of this activity was the organization of Bilbao Talks on Aerosol Science: New Problems and New Instruments (www.ehu.eus/bilbaotalks2012/), gathering world-class aerosol scientists together with young researchers. She serves currently (2014-2016) as General Secretary of the European Aerosol Assembly. Kai Savolainen is Research Professor, Nanosafety Research, at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. He obtained his Dr. Sci. degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Helsinki in 1981, and his Ph.D. degree in toxicology from the University of Kansas, USA, in 1987. His research covers inflammatory and genetic effects, and risk assessment of nanomaterials. He has served in numerous scientific expert committees, and has led several large research consortia on nanosafety. He also coordinates the EU NanoSafety Cluster, a platform of all EU FP-funded nanosafety projects. Eng. M.Sc. Jesus Lopez de Ipina began his career in the private sector, in the fields of machinery for manufacturing and electrical facilities, as head of Projects Office. In 1995 he joined LEIA where he focused his activity in the areas of machinery, EHS management and industrial safety. From 2001 to 2010,he was the head of the Industrial Safety Unit. Since 2010 he is a Project Manager in TECNALIA. Since 2008, a significant part of its research activity focuses on the field of nanosafety. He participated in several FP7 projects (Nanex, nanoStair, Polyfire, IntegRisk) and was the project coordinator of Scaffold. Currently he is taking part in various H2020 projects, such as Platform, Fast and EC4SafeNano, focusing his research on the safe design (SbD) of nanotech processes. He is a member of CEN TC 352/WG3 and AENOR AET-GT15, and actively participates at the European Technology Platform on Industrial Safety and the EU-Nanosafety cluster.
