Occupational Exposure Limits for Airborne Toxic Substances: Values of Selected Countries Prepared from the I.L.O.-C.I.S. Data Base of Exposure Limits

Overview

A crucial problem facing governments is the increasing environmental pollution from modern technology and the potential concomitant health risks. The average annual world production of chemicals is about 400 million tonnes, representing five to seven million known chemicals, 5 to 10 per cent of which are considered hazardous, while 150 to 200 are thought to have carcinogenic properties. This book aims to provide, in tabular form, the limits prescribed or recommended in a number of countries, indicating the maximum acceptable non-offensive level of airborne pollutants in the working environment. The countries were selected because of their differing criteria for establishing exposure limits and their different ways of implementing these standards. Exposure limits are continuously updated and the latest values prescribed or recommended are presented here. This book may assist governments, occupational safety and health specialists, employers' organizations and trade unions to compare criteria and values applied in the countries reviewed, and to help establish better common standards. The book aims to make a contribution to the International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS), prepared in close collaboration with the International Register of Potentially Toxic Chemicals (IRPTC) of the United Nations Environment Programme.
