Author Information

David Holdcroft was born and raised in Stafford. He served his national service as an officer with the Ist battalion of the North Staffordshire regiment including in 1953 Korea, when its armistice was declared. He achieved a first class honours in History at Trinity College Cambridge and lectured as a professor of philosophy in Manchester, Warwick and Leeds universities. At Leeds he headed the philosophy department and served as Pro-Vice Chancellor, founding the renowned Leeds University textile museum (ULITA). He was a Director of several spin-out companies including Yorkshire Cancer Research and Photopharmica, and chairman of a biotechnology company. He wrote a number of successful and widely cited academic books and papers.  David has three children from his first marriage and was married for nearly fifty years to his second wife Eileen, to whose three children he was a generous stepfather. Through a shared love of France he and Eileen bought a house in Brittany. Whilst there they befriended Renee Sicot and received information on the French resistance that inspired this book. He was an avid traveller both for work and pleasure, notable trips included Russia, Japan and a Visiting Professor tenure in America. He maintained an active interest in technological and scientific innovation, and was a great lover of sport, having played cricket for the Warwick University team, and was a lifelong football fan.
