So, naturally I am over the moon that in less than a fortnight Ill be the proud (and very anti-social) owner of the latest offering in the series: The Sending. Set in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by Weaponmachines, the series follows the story of the misfit Elspeth Gordie who, like her friends, has the ability to telepathically communicate with beasts and other misfits. Elspeth must find a place for herself and her misfit friends within the cruel, authoritarian world controlled by the Council and the fanatical religious order the Herder faction. With the aid of her friends, cat Maruman and horse Ghaltha, Elspeth must follow the clues, left behind many years ago specifically for her, to find the site where the weaponmachines are sleeping, waiting to finish the job they started. Its a race against time as she strives to outwit her counterpart seeking to end the world. Carmody is a wonderful writer. The worlds she creates are always complete and, despite the differences, still familiar. Her characters are raw, real and flawed, which is what makes them so loveble. Ive always thought of them as old friends. The only problem is the length of time between books - but given the other wonderful places shes taken me to in the meantime Ill forgive her.
