OverviewIn the field of Physical Education, there has been much discussion about nutritional status, physical activity, and health among school-aged adolescents. A few decades ago, a phenomenon known as nutritional transition occurred, causing a reversal in body composition across all age groups, and increasingly among adolescent schoolchildren. The predominance of nutritional deficiency was gradually replaced by excess. Parallel to the reversal in nutritional status, changes were also observed in the epidemiological profile of diseases associated with this condition. Nutritional deficiencies gave rise to infectious diseases, but chronic non-communicable diseases are now strongly associated with overweight and obesity in the modern world. The convenience of the modern world is leading adolescents to a sedentary lifestyle due to reduced physical activity and excessive consumption of poor-quality food, triggering epidemic levels of metabolic disorders and other pathologies. In this work, Maricélia dos Santos Oliveira, Cláudia Maria da Silva Vieira, and Mara Jordana Magalhães Costa provide a compendium on the subject, supplemented by research conducted with school-aged adolescents.
