OverviewNursing Studies: Definitions and Directions This appendix presents a position statement issued by the American Nurses' Association's Commission on Nursing Research to provide additional insight into the necessity, philosophy, and scope of nursing research. It is cited in its entirety here:1 In recent years, there has been a growing awareness among the general public that valuable resources are limited and that their utilization requires careful consideration. In this context, the relative costs of various strategies for utilizing health care resources to meet the nation's current and future needs are receiving more and more attention. Nurses are simultaneously taking on more decision-making responsibilities for the provision of health care, and it is reasonable to anticipate that this trend will continue. As a result, it is evident that determining in the 1980s which directions for nursing research ought to receive priority funding and effort is both timely and desirable. The American Nurses' Association's Commission on Nursing Research, made up of nine nurses who are actively involved in research and have a wide range of preparation and experience, came up with the following priorities.
