Overview

The International Atomic Energy Agency received a request in 1994 from the Nordic Council of Ministers to organize a seminar on International Co-operation on Nuclear Waste Management in the Russian Federation. Operational safety of nuclear power plants in central and Eastern Europe, including the former USSR, has been high on the international agenda, and consequently international co-operation to improve the situation is under way. However, management of nuclear waste has not attracted similar attention. The seminar therefore focused on providing a clearer picture of the complex waste management infrastructure of the Russian Federation, and on encouraging greater international co-operation.
