It is wonderfully correct, con sidering the rapidity of its compilation (it is said to have occupied two years), that it is the work of Norman commissioners and clerks taking oral evidence from A. S. Witnesses, and was transcribed from the crabbed and abbreviated writing of the period by other clerks. Numerous errors are of course to be found in it, and local charters of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries are often preferable authorities.
