Thomas Paine warned the young nation about the ""summer soldier and the sunshine patriot,"" those who would cheer liberty only when the skies were clear, and the cost was small. The Revolution, however, was not won by such men. It was carried on the backs of ordinary families who stepped away from their fields, their shops, their hearths, and the comfort of familiar lives to answer a call that offered no certainty except hardship. This book tells the story of my own ancestors-men who did not wait for better weather. Some left behind hundreds of acres of good land, prosperous farms, and the security of well-established homes. Others were young, untested, or already burdened with families of their own. Yet they went.
