OverviewWilliam Edward Hickman was a self-confessed murderer who was the first defendant to use the insanity plea as a defense to homicide. He was also addicted to movies, and the influence of film on his fantasy life was part of his defense. In an ironic twist some of the prominent figures involved in his prosecution were later tried and convicted of corruption in a case related to criminal activity in the film industry. Hickman was the first in a long line of celebrity criminals who have been used to feed the idea of news as entertainment. We are now at the point where criminal are tried and convicted in the media long before the courts have rendered a verdict. This raises serious questions about the possibility of real justice as opposed to trial by paparazzi.
