According to the author, This essay is an attempt to reason out the problem of modern church design as it presents itself to that branch of Nonconformity, which, from its origin in the seventeenth century, has gradually developed into a group of Unitarian and kindred Liberal Christian congregations. This useful work is based on observations of 289 places of worship in England. It looks at style, with an emphasis on the Greek Revival and the Gothic Revival, and offers a well considered glimpse of 18th and 19th century church styles. This new edition is dedicated to the memory of Dudley Richards, longtime tutor and scholar of Oxford's Harris Manchester College.
