Non-Orthogonal/Orthogonal Data Transception

Overview

Non-orthogonal/orthogonal data tranception means that the data is transmitted in non-orthogonal way but detected in orthogonal way. It is known that to send N orthogonal bandpass signals in T seconds, N/T Hertz bandwidth is required. Such a transmission scheme can be realized in practice on OFDM systems. If the orthogonality condition is relaxed, then this minimum bandwidth is not required and the bandwidth efficiency can be considerably improved, especially when low-order constellations are used. Faster-than-Nyquist signaling is an example of this paradigm. However, due to receiver complexity this paradigm has not received much attention. The proposed OFDM like transmission/reception scheme, in this book, is a significant departure of existing non-orthogonal schemes where the lost orthogonality at the transmitter is re-attained at the receiver and the signal is detected in an orthogonal way. This reception technique is much simpler than existing non-orthogonal based techniques used in the non-orthogonal OFDM and Faster-than Nyquist signaling, while the tranception system offers twice bandwidth efficiency of an OFDM system with the same power efficiency (the same bit error rate under the same transmitter power).
